Domestic duck

This beautiful animal, the duck was domesticated like Volaille, or species of Basse-cour. One raises it for his Chair. It is necessary to distinguish various the races from Canard domesticates, resulting from the species Anas platyrhynchos , the Canard mallard, of the species Cairina moschata , the Musk duck, species domesticated in South America. These two species are usually hybridées to produce the Canard mulard (hybrid sterile).

The duck can be adapted in multiple ways. Let us quote in particular:

Diseases

Ducks, as all the birds can be carrying many parasites and microbes, than they can convey as predatory animals.
Le duck is in particular one of the natural hosts of the Bird influenza and the Maladie of Newcastle, and it can sometimes be about it carrying without signs disease (asymptomatic carrier).

the case of the H5N1

It seems that the goose and duck breedings can shelter asymptomatic carriers of the virus H5N1 of the Avian flu, including in Europe : The October 29th 2007, following the confirmed detection of the H5N1 in breedings of German ducklings, with asymptomatic carriers, FAO alerted the EU on the fact that the H5N1 could already in certain zones of Europe being asymptomatiquement present in domestic ducks and geese. These animals in apparent good health could transmit the virus to the chickens in which the virus is mortal. FAO fears that the EU does not become the third world zone of endemic presence of the virus.
Le risk would be more tall of a persistence of the virus and hearth of avian H51N in the zones of the EU where important duck populations and domestic geese live. It is the case for example around the Black Sea (20 million approximately ducks are high only in Ukraine, and four million ducks and four million domestic geese are high in Romania and in the Delta of the Danube (they are densities comparable with those of the Asian zones where the H5N1 persists and circulates in chickens specifies FAO). Joseph Domenech (Veterinary as a chief with FAO) exhorts the EU with " to prepare to face new waves of hearths of avian flu, most probably of the east towards the west, if the virus succeeds in being maintained throughout the year in ducks and geese of breeding. At this occasion, FAO estimated that it was necessary to re-examine the strategies of evaluation and risk management, monitoring and research of the virus. In particular, the monitoring of the H5N1 in the breedings should not be limited to only chickens.
