Duchy of Coligny

The duchy of Coligny relates to two distinct grounds, both had by the Maison of Coligny:

  • the seigniory of Châtillon-on-Loing, set up in duchy in 1643 under the name of Coligny , in favor of Gaspard III of Coligny (1584-1646).

  • the county of Coligny-le-Neuf, set up in 1648 by King Louis XIV, on the ground of Coligny (in Bresse and Revermont) to the profit of Gaspard IV of Coligny (1620-1649), lieutenant-general of the armies of the King and wire of known as Gaspard III.

The title of Duc of Coligny goes back to the XVIIe century. It was carried by three members of the house of Coligny, following erection in duchy of the seigniory of Châtillon-on-Loing (1643, 1646) and of the county of Coligny (1648).

First duke of Coligny

Gaspard III of Coligny, count of Coligny, lord of Châtillon-on-Loing Marshal of France (1584-1646). In 1643, the King set up the ground of Châtillon in duchy under the name of Coligny. Gaspard III thus became Duc of Coligny.

Second duke of Coligny

Duchy on the county of Coligny (in Bresse).

Gaspard IV of Coligny, wire of Gaspard III, lieutenant-general of the Armies of the King (1620-1649), died of a wound received with the combat of Charenton whereas the King had just created it Marshal of France. With died from his father, it accepted confirmation of the erection of Châtillon in duchy, but under the name of Duc of Châtillon. However, in November 1648, the King set up in duchy-peerage the county of Coligny (in Bresse & Revermont, today in the department of Ain), under his original name of Coligny.

Gaspard IV was thus Duc of Châtillon (1646), then Duc of Coligny (1648).

Third duke of Coligny

Duchy on the county of Coligny (in Bresse).

Henry-Gaspard de Coligny, wire posthumous of the precedent, was Duc of Coligny. He died young person in 1657.
