Duchy of Aquitaine
The duchy of Aquitaine made up in 675, in died of Childéric II. It is reconstituted at the 9th century, like heir to the kingdom of Aquitaine allotted to Pépin II (death in 838). It was then the object of the fights between the counts of Auvergne, Toulouse and Poitiers.
It passes in 909 to Guillaume the Piles († 918). With died of its nephew Acfred in 928, the duchy disappears. It is reconstituted by his cousin Ebles Manzer, with the Auvergne, the Velay and the Poitou, which it inherited, and the the Limousin, the Quercy and part of the Saintonge, which it conquers. But his/her son Guillaume Tête of Packing keeps only the Poitou and part of the Limousin, however that the count de Toulouse Raymond Pons conquers the south of the old duchy and takes the title of duke in 946.
Guillaume Tête of Packing restores his situation in 952 but abdicates in 963.
His/her son Guillaume IV Fièrebrace is combined with Hugues Capet and is made recognize the title of duke of Aquitaine in 973, and the territories which depend on it are disputed to him more. The duchy is then limited, not including/understanding the Gascogne, the Languedoc, the Rouergue, the Velay and the Gévaudan.
The XI {{E}} and XII {{E}} centuries are the great time of the duchy. The descendants of Guillaume IV follow one another without encumbers. The age of the court of Poitiers is particularly brilliant under Guillaume IX, one of most remarkable the Troubadour S, and its son Guillaume X.
The two marriages of Aliénor of Aquitaine, girl and heiress of Guillaume X, make initially pass Aquitaine to the king de France Louis VII, then with the Plantagenêt Henri II in 1152.
The duke of Aquitaine was one of the six even laic primitive.
