Dubbele Wiericke
The Dubbele Wiericke is a channel Dutch of the Holland-Southerner.
Geography
Dubbele Wiericke, sometimes Grote Wiericke , was dug in 1360 to evacuate the surplus of water of the Vieux the Rhine towards the Dutch IJssel. Dubbele Wiericke is also used as liaision for the navigation between the two rivers, and it belongs to old the Line of defense of Holland. Dubbele Wiericke is créusee between Nieuwerbrug and Hekendorp, while passing by Driebruggen.
Line of defense
Parallel in Dubbele Wiericke one dug the Enkele Wiericke, the small strip of land between the two is called Lange Ruige Weide. In 1627 the Stathouder Guillaume III made build on Western bank of Enkele Wiericke a Digue ( Prinsendijk or dam of the Prince ), the purpose of which was to retain the water of the higher course of the rivers and to concentrate it in Lange Ruige Weide. It is the narrowest point of the Line of defense of Holland, which measures only 1500 meters here.
