Duarte Pacheco Pereira
Duarte Pacheco Pereira (Lisbon? - 1533) navigator, was warlike and Portuguese cosmographer and was the son of João Pacheco and Isabelle Pereira. It was born between 1443 and 1450 in Lisbonne.
Oldest of its known ancestors Diogo Lopes Pacheco, lord of Ferreira de Alves was one of the assassins of Inês of Castro, It flees in Spain, from of returned at the time of the Maître of Sitted and recovered all its goods, becoming one of the advisers of the new monarch.
In 1455, one finds João Pacheco well-read man which receives a grant of the king. Contrary to the tradition, it is not very probable that it went in 1492 to São Jorge de Mina, where Diogo de Azambura directed the construction of the fortress. It is known only that, in 1488, Bartolomeu Dias, in its voyage to the Cape of Good Hope, found it seriously sick with the Île of the Prince and took it along to the Portugal.
In 1490, it lives in Lisbon of the pension of the king of which it has right because of his title.
As geographer and recognized cosmographer, in 1498, it was charged by Manuel Ier with a secret forwarding organized with an aim of recognizing the zones located beyond line of demarcation of Tordesillas what would have deut for consequence the Découverte Brazil. In 1503, it accompanies the Albuquerque cousins in the Indies, it remains with Cochim with 150 men and some Indians to keep the fortress where it manages to overcome Samorim of Calecute which had 50.000 men. From return to Lisbon in 1505, it was accepted in great triumph.
In Lisbon, and everywhere, its exploits were known and a report/ratio was sent by it to the Pape and other sovereigns of the Chrétienté. This year, it was charged to give hunting to the Corsaire French Pierre de Mondragon, which acted between the the Azores and the Portuguese coast and attacked the ships there coming from the Indies. It met it in 1509 with the course Finisterre where it beat it and took it. In 1511, it ordered the fleet sent to the help of Tangier which was attacked by the army of the king of Fes.
It Marie the following army with D. Antónia de Albuquerque which accepted one obtains 120.000 reais, which will be given to him by fraction until in 1515.
In 1519, it was named captain and governor of São Jorge da Mina where it remains until 1522. It returns to captive Portugal, by order of D. Jean III under the charge of gold smuggling but one does not know really the reason for this decision of the king. When it was released, it received 300 cruzados as payment of jewels which he had reported of São Jorge da Mina and which he had entrusted to the House Mines to be molten.
He died at the beginning of 1533 and his/her son accepted from the king a pension of 20.000 reais. João Fernandes Pacheco formed part since its youth of the house Jean III. A legend was created around Duarte Pacheco Pereira after its death. Luis of Camões in the Lusiades calls it Grand Pacheco Aquiles Lusitano. To the XVIIe century, Jacinto Cordeiro devoted to him two very long Spanish comedies and Vicente Cerqueira Doce a poem in ten songs which one lost the trace.
