Dschang is a city of the west of the Cameroun and the prefecture of the department of the Menoua, populated approximately: 87000 inhabitants. It is one of the hearts of the country Bamiléké.

Located at the Western limits of the province of the West, Dschang is to approximately 60 km of Bafoussam (45 mn), 300 km of Douala (4 hours) and approximately 400 km of Yaounde (5 hours).

It is famous for its university which includes/understands the agricultural Agronomy and Faculty of Science (F.A.S.A).

With: 1400 meters of altitude, on the south-eastern slope of the Mounts Bamboutos, Dschang has a micro climate (average of 16 °C with 21 °C, maximum of 31 °C during the month the hottest in April), which makes a zone of holiday of it par excellence; it is after Foumban the first tourist destination of the Province of the West. The urban community of Dschang opened since July 1998 a Tourist bureau (BP 159), the first created in Cameroun, in collaboration with that of Nantes, the Loire Atlantique; correlatively the French Co-operation financed a project Assainissement of the City and Approvisionnement of certain districts of water.

Dschang is a historical city, under the German authority of 1884 to 1916, under British control of 1919 to 1920, and under French administration until the accession of Cameroun to independence (1960).

Curiosities

The city is known Cameronian and foreign tourists for his " Center climatique" , three-star hotel which is made conspicuous by its situation with: 1500 meters of altitude on the sides of the one of the hills being next to the city, its bungalows individual of one, two or three parts, and its riding school.

The place is very snuffed nationals and foreigners for their holidays.

Principal tourist attractions are:

  • falls of " Mami wata" at 19 km and 15 minutes of the city in the village close to Fongo Tongo ( the legend tells that a siren " mami wata" there would live and from time to time leave to allure a man and would then carry it in the depths to make his/her lover of it. This siren is the bienfaitrice of the village Apouh, a worship to him is returned each year).
  • the various surrounding traditional chefferies (of which Foto or Fongo Tongo).
  • the market of Dschang and its house of exposure of contemporary artists of the city.
  • Ngan, the market which is held every week (assured walkabout).
  • the splendid panorama of mountainous landscapes covered with pieces sown of various cultures and intersected with hedges of hibiscus and other plants used here in a traditional way to delimit the pieces and to contain the cattle in enclosures.
  • the Municipal Lake, lake of reserve created in the Sixties, of a surface of approximately 40 hectares, located near the seat of free-Cameronian Alliance and the unused airport from now on.
  • the artisanal Center, opposite the central Hospital.
  • ceremonies of the Funeral: from November to May, traditional musics and dances.
