Dry brushing and washing

The dry brushing ( drybrush in English) is a technique of Peinture on supports in reliefs, used in particular for the miniatures, it put in realistic painting of the models and the Modélisme.

It consists in using in minor amount an almost dry painting and brushing the part highly to be painted. Painting settles only at the top of the reliefs and then lets appear the details with more clearness. By using a clear painting, one can thus carry out a pretense of lighting of the reliefs, and emphasize the details and stop model.

The washing is as a complementary technique making it possible it to give relief, and consists in diluting a little painting darker as the basic color to return it completely liquid. One then obtains a juice , which one applies to the model or figurine and liquid painting will come to be fixed in the hollows and Interstice S, giving the impression of Ombre.

The practical application of the " brossage" ask a little drive, but it is preferable to have enough painting, only of too. To check the quantity of painting on the brush, it is enough to pass the dish of the hairs slightly, that is to say on a piece of paper towel or the end of a finger (Attention with a possible toxicity of painting).

If it misses painting, the color will not settle, if there is of too much, it will completely recover the details (digital fingerprints, texture of paper, etc), if the amount is correct, the color will settle only on the reliefs. To carry out a good brushing, it is preferable to use a flat brush.

During a dry brushing, the pressure as well as the quantity of painting will intervene on the thickness of the feature. It is thus possible to very easily create a range of darkest with most clearly, while exploiting the intensity of brushing.

This technique can be also used for to age ( weathering in English) a surface, light blows of brush on the whole of surface make it possible to apply in an irregular color clearer or different way, which gives an aspect worn or dirty to the object, and to emphasize the fine details (rivets, bolts etc…)

The conjugation of the dry brushing and the washing makes it possible for example to obtain one made realistic on the cape of a figurine: washing for the hollows into dark, then dry brushing on stop.
