Drust mac Erp

Drust mac Erp or Drest mac Erip King of Pictes

The first king of Pictes of the period known as historical of the list of the " Picte" chronicle;. Drust wire of Erp is famous to have reigned 100 years and to have taken part in 100 battles! It is a question of a traditional image to appoint a particularly warlike king, following the example Conn Cetchathach ( With the Hundred combat ) laughed Ard Érenn (supreme king) legendary of Ireland (177 - 212).

The " Picte" chronicle; specify that the bishop Saint Patrick would have returned in Ireland in 432 according to the traditional date of the Annales of Ulster which would correspond to the 19th year of its reign this indication can make it possible to consider for this monarch a one real duration reign of approximately 40 years is (410 - 452) what would correspond rather well with the date of 449 mentioned for its death in Annals of Clonmacnoise.

It is however remarkable to note that ten posterior sovereigns chose Drust (Gaëlique) or Drest (Picte) like name of reign and that to this large king of legend correspond the periods of the invasions Pictes in Brittany which encouraged the local populations partly romanized to call upon the mercenaries Saxons and to imprudently entrust the responsibility to them to protect them.
