Drum with friction

The drum with friction is a Musical instrument of the family of the Membranophone S.

It consists of a cylindrical Fût (Caisse of resonance) covered with a membrane, through which a wood stem is fixed. The player rubs the stem (with the hands or a wet rag), skin towards outside, and produced vibrations transmitted by the membrane.

In certain instruments, the stem can be left free, and it is then the friction of this one against the membrane which produces the vibrations. Other instruments replace the stem by Crin of horse.

With the Middle Ages existed a drum with friction called " Rommelpot". This one making up of a wood stem bound on the medium of the skin of the drum, itself fixed on a barrel, generally, out of terra cotta. The player rubbed a wet rag against the wood stem in order to produce the sound.
