Song
Since Ray off Light, the second extract of the album of the same name, was published with one month of delay to the the United States, the recording company decided to publish " Drowned World/Substitute for Love" only in Europe and Asia to satisfy these markets while waiting for the following extract, The Power off Good-Bye.The song begins with a male-intonated voice susurrant " You see" , which appears with being a sample of the song " Why I Follow the Tigers" of The San Sebastian Strings. The author of the song, Rod McKuen, explains:
- “the voice is that of Jesse Pearson and the sentence which he repeats is You see . If one compares the words of Drowned World and Why I Follow the Tigers one finds that Drowned follows the same development as Tigers . This is why Anita and me received the mention of authors of the song and not a simple mention of sampling. ”
The original title was No Substitute For Love but comprised some differences on the level in the words. This version made irruption on Internet in a innofficielle way.
In 2001, the Drowned World Tour was affublé the same personal one.
Drowned World formed also part of the round Confessions Tower of 2006.
Video clip
The exit of the extract of " Drowned World/Substitute for Love" was assisted of a Vidéoclip which was carried out by Walter Stern. Turning took seat the 26 and June 27th 1998 around the Savoy hotel and the Piccadilly circus of London. The clip represents a Madonna tracked by the paparazzis. Fleeing even the other celebrities, only the protagonist does not have a deformed face. Taking refuge in its residence, the video finishes with the singer tightening her daughter (not played by her true daughter, Lourdes) in her arms, blowing " Now, I' ve find… I' ve changed my mind".
The video clip created a controversy in 1998 because of the scene where Madonna is pursued by paparazzis in the motor cycle, a scenario too similar to that which led to dead Princesse Diana in 1997. The video was viewed by Europeans for the first time the July 25th 1998. Later on, it was published in same compilation Madonna: Video The Collection 93:99 available on DVD.
