Drepanoptila holosericea

The green pigeon or ptilope vlouvlou (Drepanoptila holosericea) is an endemic species of Columbidae of New Caledonia.

Description

The male is green on the throat and the chest, yellow belly, white collar and black between the green of the chest and the yellow of the belly. The female is duller and with less marked colorings.

Habitat

This species meets in dense forest, but niche often in opened mediums, in trees in dense edge of forest. It is common to the north of a line Boulouparis - Thio. To the south of this line, it is presented in small isolated populations (one observes a population in Koghis including Thy, one with the Blue River, with Wooded Port and a population in the Island of the Pines).

Food

It is a frugivorous species which consumes only small fruits.

Nesting

From September to January, layings in September and November. The female lays only one egg, white, without spots. The nest is a summary carpet of brushwood generally located between 2 and 3,50 m height.
