The Drentsche Hoofdvaart (also Drentse Hoofdvaart ; literally principal Canal of Drenthe ) is a channel Dutch of Drenthe.
Geography
Drentsche Hoofdvaart connects the Meppelerdiep and the Reest to Meppel with the Noord-Willemskanaal with Assen and crosses the Western part of the province of Drenthe. Its principal orientation is north-north-east, and its length is of 50 km.The channel communicates with the Norgervaart, the Beilervaart, the Canal of Oranje and the Witte Wijk. This last ensures the connection with the Opsterlandse Compagnonsvaart, towards Appelscha in Frise.
The channel fills a big role in the control of the drainage of the central part of the province of Drenthe.
History
The channel was carried out between 1767 and 1780 like improvement of the Smildervaart. The last section between Smilde and Assen was completed in 1780.Initially, the channel was primarily used for the river transport of the Tourbe of the Tourbière S of the east of Drenthe and the south-east of Groningue. In the middle of the 20th century, transport diversified. Since the Years 1980, the channel less and less fulfills a function of professional transport; today, he is primarily attended by boats of pleasure.
