Dragonnier of Socotra

The dragonnier of Socotra ( Dracaena cinnabari ) is a species of the family of the Dracaenaceae , or Ruscaceae according to phylogenentic classification. It is an arborescent plant endemic Monocotylédone of the island of Socotra.

It grows naturally between 150 and 1.600 m of altitude, mainly around 600 m in frequently wrapped mountainous regions of fogs.

It is one of the species of Dragonnier S which produces the resin called Sang-dragon of which one is useful oneself in certain traditional medicines or like dye. This resin was the subject already of a trade in the ancient world. The resin is collected only once per annum; from where its great commercial value. It is transformed on the spot into a fine red powder which is then heated until forming a black paste.

The natural populations dragonniers of Socotra currently suffer from a lack of renewal which would be due not to resin harvests, or with the pasture but with a general draining of the climate of the island.
