Draft

The draft is the height of the immersed part of the Bateau which varies according to the transported load. It corresponds to the vertical distance between the floating and the point low of the hull, usually the skittle. The maximum draft of a ship is named load water-line , thus a ship which stalls 8 m has a maximum draft of 8 Mr.

Various types

One specifies the term according to his load or of his configuration. ; Equal draft: A ship is with equal draft when its draft is the same one with before and with the back null plate. ; Draft in load: When the ship is charged. ; Light draft: When the ship is empty. ; Average draft: Average with the drafts before and back.

Large ships

The large ships try to maintain a draft average when they are with light (without cargo), in order to better “pass” to the sea and less to suffer from the effects of the wind (velic center of pressure high). With this intention they carry out a Ballastage following the unloading of a cargo.

The draft of a large ship has only little direct link with its stability, the latter depends only on the respective positions of the metacenter of hull and the center of gravity. But one can admit that a ship with light has a rather strong stability which can harm to him by implying a restoring moment the too high Roulis. A ship charged (at fort drawing from water) as for him can have strong or on the contrary a low stability according to the way in which it was charged (height of the center of gravity).

The draft of the ships can increase when they are moving, phenomenon called surenfoncement or squat.

Pleasure boats

A weak draft makes it possible the boat to sail by low height of water making it possible to join small ports, to sail in river or of “beacher”.

A fort drawing from water ensures a good stability by strong wind, the center of gravity which can be definite lower (Lest on skittle). Example: quillards of the type dragon with a draft of 1,20 m for a length of 8,90 Mr.

The multihulls (catamarans, trimarans, praos) profit from a very weak draft, stability being ensured by their great width, the anti-drift plan by drifts or small ailerons.
