Analyzes

Confirming the modernization of the myth of Dracula inaugurated by Dracula 73 , Dracula always lives in London changes nevertheless optics on the plan of the scenario: nearer to spy film than of film of vampires, the police investigation leads to a improblable apocalyptic plot mixing satanic worship, vampirism and bacteriological war. The film intervenes besides in full international crisis period (business of Watergate, defeat in Vietnam, oil crisis…) and translated rather clearly the feeling of paranoia and total uncertainty of this middle of years 1970.

The character of Dracula is reduced here only with one commercial pretext aiming at alluring the American distributers. Besides the latter, little convinced by the result, delayed the exit of film in the United States of several years and changed its title into Count Dracula and his vampires Brides (1978).

Dracula always lives in London undoubtedly remains the episode more diverting saga putting in the high-speed motorboat Christopher Lee. Besides for a long time, this last did not hide any more its lassitude with respect to a more and more abused character. It makes here its very last service of the vampire to the screen on behalf of the firm Hammer. Some projects the opponent in particular with Sherlock Holmes and the goddess Khali were an announced time, but never transfer the day.

In the last nonofficial title of the saga, the legend of the seven gold vampires (1974), Lee will be replaced in the role of Dracula by John Forbes-Robertson. Peter Cushing, for its part, will renew there, for the last time, its role of professor Van Helsing.

Around Film

  • the French title is the quasi-exact translation not original title of exploitation, but of that employed during its turning: " Dracula Is Alive and Well and Living room in London" (Dracula is alive, goes well and lives London). According to certain sources, the following alternative was also considered: " Dracula Is Dead… and Well and Living room in London" (Dracula died,… goes well and lives London) whose irony would approach more dead and happy Dracula to be it (1995) of Mel Brooks, which, him, was openly comic.

  • Following a negligence concerning its rights of exploitation, Dracula always lives in London since definitively fell into the public domain on the American territory.

  • Exceptionally, the musical band of Dracula always lives in London is entrusted not to James Bernard, which took care of the majority of the episodes, but to John Cacavas, in particular type-setter of the films Terreur in Shanghai express train (1973) and the Shipwrecked men of the 747 (1977), both with Christopher Lee.
