Dr. Martens is a registered trademark of Chaussure in Cuir, designed at the origin with an orthopedic aim , then used in the working mediums like Safety shoe. The mark is also known like Doc. Martens , Docs or DM' S .
The shoe is invented by the doctor Klaus Maertens (note the different orthography) during the Second world war. In 1945, it is wounded with ankle while skiing. The boots of the army are too uncomfortable for its foot, it then sticks to improve them during its convalescence. Maertens creates a shoe carried out in a finer leather and a ventilated and graduated sole in order to measure wear with use of it: of aucuns regard this shoe as the first orthopedic shoe (cf note of the product).
If the family of Dr. Maerteens remains owner of the mark " Dr. Martens" , the company Grigg' S Ltd, based in Northampton (GB) obtains the license of manufacture and marketing of the shoes Dr. Martens, which it sells associated with the Airwair mark.
April 1st, 1960, the first model general public is created, and takes the name of 1460 (1-4-60). This model with 8 holes, high stem and sole PVC becomes emblematic mark, and is declined in many leathers, decorated sometimes psychedelic colors and reasons. In 2000, the firm markets the original model decorated with a dragon, signs astrological Chinese with the honor this year: it is the " millenium edition".
