The activity of a doxographe consists to reproduce and often comment on the remarks, opinions and writings of former or contemporary thinkers. The term doxographe originates in ( doxa opinion, and of graphein to write) the German philologist Hermann Diels.

Very many texts of doxographes, of any origines, enable us to establish the Histoire of a discipline or a thought. Obviously, the study of the signed documents of the hand of doxographe must be particularly meticulous, in order to separate the Mythe from reality, the reformulation and the frank deterioration of the faithful reproduction.
