Downtown area of Limoges

The district of the downtown area of Limoges is, as its name indicates it, located in the middle of the regional capital.

Situation

The district is located in full geographical center of the city. It is delimited by boulevards, avenues and places, taking again the layout of the old ramparts. These boulevards and crossroads are in the direction of the needles of a watch, on the basis of the town hall:

  • Place Leon Betoulle, place of the town hall and the aquarium
  • Boulevard Gambetta
  • Place of Groin, one of the principal places of Limoges with the Carnot place, the place Denis Dussoubs and the place of the Republic, place of the court
  • Boulevard Victor Hugo
  • Place Denis Dussoubs, regarded as one of most remarkable and more animated of Limoges, thanks to its red frontages, the cinema Multiplexing and bars.
  • Which occurred of the Release
  • Place of the Prefecture
  • Place Stalingrad, less large but very attended place, with the presence of the Opera-Theater, FNAC, CRR and proximity of the prefecture, the general advice and the commercial streets of the downtown area.
  • Boulevard Carnot
  • Crossroads Tourny, another neuralgic crossroads, accommodating the college Gay-Lussac, the Lafayette galleries and celebrates it Luk Hôtel.

The contour of the downtown area receives several large Artères of the city:

  • the avenue Georges Dumas (towards A20, Toulouse, Panazol, Clermont)
  • the Baudin avenue (towards Isle, Périgueux)
  • the street of the Arenas (towards St-Junien, Angouleme, Niort, Holy)
  • the street François Chénieux and the avenue Garibaldi (Couzeix, Poitiers, Beaubreuil, A20, Paris, Ambazac, Guéret)
  • the place Jourdan and the avenue of the Benedictines (A20, the Palate)

History

Trade

Many trade elected shop in the downtown area. A specific association: Heart of Limoges was creates, and a special page to them is regularly devoted in the newspaper the Popular one of the Center: Turn of City.

Let us quote the recent arrival of a shop of the FNAC, street of Combes, with two steps of the Large Theater.

Transport

The downtown area is very obviously well served by the drunk lines of of STCL (see external Liens).

Line 4 is the only one to penetrate truly in the downtown area (stops Louis Blanc and Saint-Pierre); others remaining only on the boulevards.

Principal streets

The central artery of the downtown area is the street Jean Jaurès, prolonged by the street of the Préfecture (side axis).

The secondary streets are the street Turgot, which joint the boulevard Victor Hugo with the public garden Jean Giraudoux, the street Adrien Dubouché, which connect the place Denis Dussoubs to the place of the Mound, the street of the Général Cérez, between the avenue of the Release and the Stalingrad place, and the street Gondinet, prolonged by the Lansecot streets, of the Consulate, Fourie, St-Pierre and Carries-Tourny, between the boulevard Gambetta and the crossroads Tourny (transverse axis).

Picturesque streets

  • commercial streets very attended by Limougeauds (stores…) between the street Jean Jaurès and the place of the Mound: street of the Consulate, street of the Temple, street of the Bell-tower, street Iron trade and very pretty court of the Temple.

  • streets quite as commercial and impossible to circumvent of the west of the downtown area: the street Adrien Dubouché, the place of Présidial, the street Assemble-with-Regret.
  • the principal place of the downtown area: the place of the Mound ( Mòta ), animated, where the Central Halles are
  • the small lanes of the old working of Butchery: the street of Butchery ( Bocharia ), the street Jug-with Or…
