Downs

Downs area of the Handle between North Foreland and South Foreland, on the east coast of the Kent, between the strait of Dover and of the estuary of the the Thames.
Protected for the East by sands from the bench of Goodwin and for North and the West by the coast, Downs were used as a basis permanent for the roads and men-of-war patrolling in the the North Sea for the boats leaving the building site naval of Chatham, forming a sure anchoring by heavy weather.
