Douz

Douz is a city of the south of the known Tunisia as the “door of the the Sahara”. During the Antiquity, it was the most important Oasis of the area.

Attached administratively to the Governorship of Kébili, it constitutes a municipality of 27.060 inhabitants located at 488 kilometers of Tunis.

Up to one recent period, it was an important stopover for the Caravane S in their voyages between the Sahara and septentrional Tunisia. It is currently a destination of many tourists come to visit the Dune S of the Grand Eastern Erg.

The city accommodates one of the Marché S most characteristic of the country where are daily sold artisanal products but also, once per week, of the ass S and the Dromadaire S. there One also finds a museum ethnic which illustrates the life of the people which lived in the Désert.

Each year proceeds the International festival of the Sahara which gathers the wandering tribes of Tunisia, of Algérie, Libya and of Egypt. The folk demonstration, which lasts four days, proceeds with the manner of Olympic Games of the desert.

Economy

The economy of the city has particular advantages compared to the surrounding villages. The ground is fertile there and the culture of the Datte is a great source of revenue for the population. In addition, the incomes rising from the trade of the oasis were easily replaced by the incomes of tourism.
