Doullens is a common French, located in the department of the Somme and the area Picardy.

Geography

Doullens, small town (in the North of the Sum and close to the Pas-de-Calais) which sprinkles the Authie, is practically halfway with the intersection of these axes:

With the Southern periphery of the locality, on the right of the RN 25 in direction of Amiens, hides in the vegetation and the slopes the imposing citadel “out of star”.

Chronology

The city is joined together with the Couronne in 1225. Fortified town important, Doullens is burned by Louis XI to punish it to be itself openly put side of Charles Bold the.

July 24th 1595: Battle of Doullens: whereas the Spaniards and the Ligue were beaten in June with Fountain-Frenchwoman, a Spanish army hustles the royal army with Doullens (600 killed gentlemen). In the catch of Doullens which follows, 4000 people are massacred.
May 2nd 1598: with the Peace of Vervins, Doullens makes return to France
August 1837: Victor Hugo, arrived in evening, spends the night of the 12 to the 13 “ to the Large Turk ”, then leaves the city after having visited the citadel to continue its tourist voyage towards Arras.

1918 : March 26th, the Single Commandement of the forces allied on the Western face is entrusted to the general Foch. The signature takes place in a room of the hotel-of-city which bears this name today. The signatory representing the French government was Georges Clémenceau, as a President of the Council.
1935 : Following the implication of the tradesmen creating the Tourist office, for the Business week a giant in 6 height meters is manufactured wicker. The character represented is known locally since ten years: “ Florimond Long Minton ”, as hero of a series of tales written by the printer and publisher of the city, Charles Dessaint. Exhibé for the first time on November 10th, 1935, it will make the joy of small and large until in the Forties in good number of localities of the department.

Doullens, like other French cities, knows (in the 5 years preceding the Second world war immediately) a popular cultural effervescence, which is not without being in relation to the political boiling of the time, the Popular front.

1937 : The city celebrates with a certain ostentation the 5th Centenary of the Archers of Doullens. Most of the population takes part in musical and dressed up animation: parades, processions, etc whose installation is under the “patronage” of Léo Lagrange, under-secretary of State of the Organization of the Leisures and the Sports, qualified at the time, in the national press, by the opponents of right-hand side and extreme-right-hand side of “Minister for the idleness”. This festival proceeds June 19th and 20th 1937, just the resignation day before of Leon Blum.

The identity of the participants and observers to these “alive tables” could be found, thanks to a small booklet, the “program” published for the occasion.
