Douglas hospital
The hospital Douglas is an hospital of Montreal affiliated with the Université McGill and the World Health Organization, which looks after the people suffering from mental diseases.
Its teams of specialists and researchers constantly make evolve/move the scientific knowledge, integrate them into the care offered to their patients and divide them with the community to sensitize it and thus eliminate the prejudices surrounding the mental disease. It is located on the LaSalle boulevard, on a ground of 607.050 square meters to the accesses of the Fleuve the St. Lawrence in the district of Verdun to Montreal.
History
Founded in 1881, by Alfred Perry and a group made up members of the Protestant clergy and citizens of Montreal, the Douglas Institute is then named “Protesting Hospital for the Insane”.As of its beginnings, the Institute had to be based on the community to ensure its development. Not being directed by a religious organization, as it was the case of the majority of the French-speaking hospitals, it was necessary to count more on the generosity of the public and the voluntary help.
It is in 2006, at the time of sound 125e birthday, that the Douglas one is named Academic institute in mental health, special designation allotted to an organization in health recognized with the national plan for its expertise in a specific field and whose mission comprises several aspects: to lavish care, to make research and teaching, and to evaluate technologies.
Mission
The Douglas hospital has the role of offering dedicated services and surspecialized in a context of continuum of care with its partners of the first line; of miser on the prevention and the re-establishment, and to contribute to the destigmatisation of the mental disease; to contribute to the advance of knowledge and the practices by research and teaching.
Mandates
As Academic institute in mental health, the Douglas one has triple mandate to look after, discover and teach in a context of division of knowledge.
Public awareness campaign
With the support of the Foundation of Douglas, the Institute launched in 2007 a public awareness campaign to the mental health. This countryside consists in setting up display panels through Montreal and inviting the population to consult mini-sites relating to particular topics such as the burn-out, the depression and the disorders of the food. The countryside will also make it possible to encourage the gifts in order to increase the financing in research in mental health.- www.leburnoutsesoigne.com
