Douglas DC-6
DC-6 is a Avion four-engined plane built by Douglas Aircraft Company of 1946 with 1959.
On a basis of DC-4, Douglas designs this plane as a military aircraft, following the request of the US Air Force to have a plane more powerful than the DC-4. During the design, the Second world war finishes and such a plane is not really any more necessary: Douglas makes a long-distance civil aircraft of it.
The DC-6 is indicated as a C-118 Liftmaster by the US Air Force and as a R6D by the US Navy.
Douglas developed then three alternatives, equipped with more powerful engines and a longer Fuselage:
- the DC-6A, intended for the transport of freight
- the DC-6B, for the transport of passengers,
- the DC-6C, mixed apparatus (convertible)
665 DC-7 were built, including 174 DC-6, 73 DC-6A, 288 DC-6B, 105 C-118 and 25 R 6Ds. Approximately a hundred is still in service.
