Douglas DC-4
DC-4 is a Avion four-engined plane built by Douglas Aircraft Company between 1942 and 1947.
Developed as an evolution of DC-3 at the request of several American companies which financed its development partly, the first prototype called DC-4E , able to transport 52 passengers, made its first flight in 1938. Equipped with a Empennage with three drifts and with a three-wheeled train, this DC-4E, tested by United Airlines appeared too complex and under motorized. The Japan repurchased it to study of it construction and a new DC-4 was proposed with the companies which ordered it on plan.
Construction in series was launched whereas the Second world war started: USAF requisitioned the line production and the famous military version C-54 Skymaster (or R5D near the US Navy) was thus produced with more than 1000 specimens.
Douglas the manufacture of the civil DC-4 until 1947 continued: 1163 planes of this type were built and nearly 300 C-54 were resold for various activities. GLAM had several until 1970 of them.
