Double-decker

Deux-Ponts ( Zweibrücken in German) is a German city and a district, located in the Land of the Rhineland-Palatinat.
It counts 37 000 inhabitants.
History

Double-decker appeared the first time in documents in the year 1170. Since 1182 Deux-Ponts is a county, since 1410 a Duché, directed by a branch of the voters of Palatinat.
Principality
This principality, whose limits often varied, was composed of the town of Double-decker and those of Annweiler and Berg-Zabern with their surroundings; later it increased county of Sponheim and most of that of Veldenz.Its existence dates from the 12th century. At that time, it carried the title of county and belonged to vassal lords of the bishop of Metz.
In 1390, this first house being itself extinct, the county passed, initially by half, with the Count Palatine of the the Rhine of the house of Wittelsbach, and with the count of Hanau, Philippe V; but soon, all the county was joined together by Louis the Black; Count Palatine, second wire of Etienne, Elector Palatine of the Rhine.
Louis, the first, took the title of duke. He died in 1489. Its descendants gave rise to several branches, of which most important are those of: Double-decker, of Neubourg and Birkenfeld.
The branch of Double-decker died out at the 16th century, after having given 4 Elector Palatines.
The branch of Neubourg gave four sovereigns to the Sweden: Charles X, Charles XI, Charles XII and Ulrique-Éléonore.
Charles XII of Sweden having died without male descent in 1718, the principality of Double-decker passed to the branch of Birkenfeld (1731), to which Charles Theodore belongs, Count Palatine of Double-decker then, also, Elector Palatine (1742), then voter of Bavaria (1777). He died without descent legitimates in 1799.
The French revolutionary troops seized in 1792 the county Double-decker. The Traité of Lunéville made of it part of the department of the Mount-Thunder (capital: Mainz).
The Treated of Vienna 1814 ressuscita not the county from which the greatest part was given to the Bavaria, the remainder being divided between the dukes of Saxony-Cobourg, Hesse-Hombourg and Oldenbourg.
