Douarnenez

Douarnenez is a common French of the department of the Finistere in Brittany. It is an important fishing port and also a Marina.

Its inhabitants bears the name of Douarnenistes ; their neighbors call sometimes them (in particular women) PEN sardin , in reference to the cap which the women carried and who resembles the head of a sardine ( PEN meaning head in Breton).
La common was increased in 1946 while amalgamating with the common neighbors of Ploaré, Pouldavid and Tréboul.

Geography

Douarnenez is located at 600km in the west of Paris, 250 km in the west of Nantes and 25 km in the west of Quimper.

Characteristic of the city, the island Tristan which is located at approximately 50 meters coast. It is accessible to foot, only during the low tides. A headlight is there.

The city is made up of several districts:

  • Tréboul : the maritime district of Poullan which was attached to Douarnenez as from on June 16th 1946;

  • Listrouarn (or Listriouarn): is located on the old coastal axis of Poullan at Treboul at the east of Kerleiou;
  • Ar It harrbont: the district of Treboul, today gathering the cities HLM;
  • Kerrigi: the district of the bottom of the port of Treboul;
  • Toubalan: the artisanal zone;
  • Kergesten: the district of Treboul also gathering cities HLM;

  • PEN it hoad: the district of the bottom of Ploare coming from the center town;
  • Ti Marc' hig: the name of the old people's home depending on the hospital;
  • Golven (Ar Golvez): in the past a waste ground, being used for drying of the nets.

History

The presence of tanks with Garum in Plomarc' H attests antiquity of the site. But it is of Pouldavid that the fabrics (called Olonnes) of Locronan left to export.

According to the legend of the town of Ys, a city thrives would have been built formerly in bay, before being absorbed by the ocean.

At the beginning of the 12th century, the bishop of Cornwall, Robert, made gift of the island of Tutuarn saint to the monastery of Marmoutier (close to Turns in Indre-et-Loire). This island was identified with the island Tristan and its old name which refers to holy Tudy could also be at the origin of the name of the city, if it is not “ douar year enez ” which means “the ground of the island”. The deed of gift rather indicates that a church existed already, a small monastery that a parish church. This commune is known for facts related to the Révolte of the Red Bonnets in 1675.

Douarnenez was the first city Communiste of France.

The blazon

The blazon was drawn by Doctor Benoiston, of Quimper, member of the French company of heraldic and sigillography and the departmental commission of heraldic of Finistere. it was set up in the new town hall in July 1977.

Economy

The city has three ports: Rosmeur, current fishing port, managed by the Chamber of commerce and of industry of Quimper Cornwall, the Port-Rhu (old ria of Pouldavid) where is based the Port-Museum and the recent media library and the marina in Tréboul. If the fishing port knows one period of decline, the marina of Treboul is to him in full growth and attracts each summer more luxurious sailing ships (like that of the Prince of Denmark which made there stopover every summer).

The two places on the market (Douarnenez Centers and Tréboul) are very attended by the tourists, the market of Treboul bordering the marina.

The sardine (fishing and canning facilities)

Douarnenez is a high place of fishing to the Sardine (3714 T in 2006). Thus, since the XIXeme centuries several canning facilities settled in the city, of which oldest in the world, Connétable, is always in activity. Vis-a-vis competition, the majority of the canning facilities of the city gradually closed their doors. Currently, there does not remain any more this past but three factories which knew to develop and resist: Small Ship, Arok and Connétable. An important exposure to the Port-museum of Douarnenez reports the history of the canning facilities in the city of the " PEN-sardin" , but also in Cornwall and on all the Atlantic littoral. Pointer, tables, sertisseuses, hermetically-sealed, truck, trunk, boxes, files, photographs, model and films… testify to this industrial activity.

Transport

The city places at the disposal of its inhabitants an urban network of bus (drunk TUD'). The city has only one coach station, the Gare the SNCF and the Aéroport being with Quimper.
