Dornier C 24

The Dornier Do 24 is a German Hydravion of the Second world war.

History

Three-engined Do 24, which took again the formula in vogue of the Hydravion to wing parasol (a wing suspended above the plane by chechmates), accomplished its first flight in July 1937; an agreement of manufacture under license was shortly after concluded with the Dutch. A small number of C 24K built in Germany were delivered to the Luftwaffe. The production of the apparatus to the Netherlands continued after the invasion of the country by the Germans; it was also ensured in France occupied by the CAMWOODS. C 24 ensured mainly of the missions of rescue at sea (C 24N-1), of maritime recognition and transport (C 24T-1 and T-2). Certain built apparatuses among the 255 finished their career within RAAF, of the Swedish air force , the service of Spanish rescue at sea or of the French Marine. As from July 1941, France was forced to make manufacture by SNCAN with Sartrouville 6 planes per month. It manufactured 46 for Luftwaffe on the whole of them. After the release, it continued to manufacture some for the Aéronavale.

In addition to Luftwaffe only the Spain received from Do  24. Besieged Germany and its territopire reducing itself by needing some more, 12 specimens were delivered to Spain at the summer and in autumn 1944. Convoyed of Germany with Pollença (Majorque), they were used until in the Seventies for reconnaissance missions and of rescue in the Mediterranean and above the Atlantic. All the planes still existing belong to this batch.

Only one specimen pertaining to the unit of rescue Seenotgruppe 81 joined Sweden starting from Nest in Poméranie controlled by a mechanic accompanied by its been engaged at the end of October 1944. Sweden bought it and implemented it until 1951.

Another C 24, which had started from Windau on May 9th, 1945 and had joined Sweden was given to the Soviet Union with its crew and the occupants fleeing the Baltic States, which had povoqué an outcry of indignation in Sweden at the time.

C 24 ATT

A Spanish specimen of the Thirties was remotorisé with three engines Pratt & Whitney off involving Canada PT6A-45B of 1125 ch of the propellers with 5 blades of Hartzell and was renamed Do ATT. The wings were modernized (new more effective profile). The first flight of the aircraft (registered D-CATD) took place on April 15th, 1983. In 1992, this apparatus was given to a museum but since beginning 2003 it revole again and is used with the Filipino by South East Asian Airlines.
