Donzy

Donzy is a common French, located in the department of the Nievre and the area Burgundy.

Its inhabitants is called Donziais.

Geography

  • Donzy is bathed by two rivers: Talvanne and the Nohain.

History

  • One finds the first traces of Donzy at the 6th century under the name of Dominiacus.
Donzy was the capital of a baronnie and one of the most important strongholds of Burgundy. Donzy was plain in the county of Nevers by the marriage of the baron Herve IV with Mahaut de Courtenay, heiress of the count de Nevers

Places and monuments

  • the Notre Dame church of Pre was built in 1107 per Herve II pennies the reign of his/her brother Geoffroy III, baron de Donzy. This church concerned the abbey of Cluny of which it is one of the most remarkable chiefs of œuvre.

Personalities related to the commune

  • the family Dupin, which gave to France of many magistrates, administrators, politicians and scientists under the Ancien Mode and with the XIXe century, was installed in Donzy and Varzy since XVIème century.
  • Jean Faiseau Baptist, agent of the ex duke of Nivernois, Louis-Jules Mancini-Mazarini? , and Jeanne Fardyr, woman Painter, domiciled with Donzy , Nievre, are condemned to died the July 15th 1793 (27 messidor year 2), by the revolutionary tribunal séant in Paris, like conspirators.

  • Donzy is the fatherland of the general Nicolas Augustin Paliard known as Paillard (1756-1831) and of the champion cycle Yves Hézard (born in 1948).

  • the poet Franc-Nohain (pseudonym of Maurice Legrand), born with Corbigny (1872-1934), spent its holidays during its childhood there.
  • It is in Donzy that the Swiss writer Louis Dumur (1863-1933) located the action of his novel a Coconut of genius (Mercure de France, 1902).

Anecdotes

  • Donzy knows a very relative celebrity, indeed her voters have since years the characteristic to vote " like the whole of France". The electoral results are often almost identical (sometimes even except for the tenth, according to the mayor, Mr. Devin), with the national results.
  • One of other curiosities of Donzy is that its Saint-Caradeuc church raises the Tricolor as well as the republican currency " Freedom, equality, fraternité" on its frontage. This would be due to divergences between the mayor anticlerical and the priest at the end of the 19th century.
  • This year, 2007, Donziais once more voted like the whole of France. Indeed, the percentages with the first turn were identical to the hundredth near for certain candidates. For the second round, Mr. Sarkozy was elected in Donzy but there was a small shift compared to France. The media were interested much in this phenomenon before the first turn. The explanation discovered is that the population of Donzy is very representative of that of France.
