Donon

The Donon is most septentrional of the major tops of the Massif of the Vosges. Located on the commune of Grandfontaine at the North-West of Schirmeck, it is rich of an human history of several times millenium.

History

Donon offering an exceptional point of view in all the directions, it was used as of the Neolithic .

At the Celtic times then Gallo-Roman, several worships were successively celebrated there: Teutatès, Mercury…

" According to a letter of Léopold Hugo to his Victor son, this one would have been conceived at the top of Donon" (Philippe Van Tieghem, Victor Hugo: A Genius without borders Larousse, 1985, p. 10).

A building imitating a temple greco-Roman was set up at the top in 1869 to shelter various archaeological lucky finds . Those joined since the museums of Épinal or Strasbourg, sometimes replaced by copies. The temple remains nevertheless the emblem of the place.

At the time of the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine in 1871, Bismarck obtained 1  000 hectares of forest of the territory of Raon-lès-Leau to make sure control of the strategic top. In 1919, at the time of the Treated of Versailles, this field to the great displeasure remained property of the commune of Grandfontaine, of common the meurthe-and-native of the Moselle region.

Geography

The solid mass of Donon sees being born several tributaries of a tributary from the the Rhine:
  • in the west, the Flat and the Vezouze;
  • in north, the the red and white Saar;
  • in the east and the south, of the brooks enlarging the Beetle.

The secondary road 392 circumvents the solid mass by the west: the Col of Donon culminates with 718 meters.
