Explanation and interpretations of the intrigue
The realizer Richard Kelly gives his personal theory in the comments of the DVD and several interviews. According to him, the October 2nd at midnight, a Univers Tangent separates from the normal universe at the time when Donnie is called for the first time by Frank, immediately before the arrival of the Artifact. This universe, unstable by nature, will inevitably stop in less than six weeks and will destroy the Universe First if the disturbing element, namely the arrival of the artefact, is not corrected. The role of Donnie (the Living room Receiver ) is to ensure the closing of the Tangent Universe, which receives for this task certain supernatural capacities. Those which die or which will die in the Tangent Universe, the Manipulated Dead , can guide and assist Donnie so that its mission is a success. Frank appears to him thus on several occasions, while Gretchen will influence the final choice of Donnie. The other characters - Manipulated Living - know unconsciously what occurs and push Donnie to close the Tangent Universe.
The official site of film gives another interpretation, informs certain remote regions on the history and reveals what arrives at several characters of the Universe First, once corrected. The film in itself leaves open the possibility that all the history proceeding in the Tangent Universe is in fact a Hallucination or a dream of the hero, which is regarded as a schizophrenic paranoiac by his psychiatrist - although she acknowledges to him implicitly thereafter, in the long version of film, that it is not insane, its drugs being placebos. The diversity of the analyzes made by the fans shows well at which point the film can be considering and included/understood according to various angles.
Director' S cut
This wide version of film, exit the May 29th 2004 with Seattle at the time of International Seattle Film Festival, adds twenty minutes of additional scenes, the extracts of the book The Philosophy off Time Travel , and changes the order of several musics.
Anecdotes
-
the “linguist celebrates” who wrote that “ cellar door ” (carries storeroom) is one of the most beautiful words (if not most beautiful) of the language English E, is actually celebrates it philologist JRR Tolkien (in its conference English and Welsh ); although Richard Kelly says in a comment that it is about Edgar Allan Poe.
- the film contains moments surprising and unexpected like an exchange from point of view between Donnie and his professor of Physique, being pressed on the texts of Stephen Hawking or a discussion on the impossibility of the sexuality of the Schtroumpf S.
- If great attention is paid, one can manage to distinguish pretenses of rabbits of the shape of Franck a little everywhere in the landscape, in tables, the shape of the trees… surely a test of Richard Kelly to identify the paranoiacs.
- At the time of a scene, Donnie and Gretchen go to the Cinéma and attend two films ( double feature ), Evil Dead and the Last Temptation of Christ . It is about a Mise in abyme (a Film in a film).
- Graham Greene was born a October 2nd, Donnie sees Frank for the first time the one October 2nd night.
- a short history of time: of Big Bang to the black holes , book of Stephen Hawking celebrates it, appears in film when Donnie discusses with its professor the voyage in time.
- At the end of film there is an error of doubling, Franck says that the end of the world will be in 28 days 60 hours 42 minutes and 12 seconds instead of 28 days 6 hours 42 minutes and 12 seconds.
Music
Richard Kelly chose Michael Andrews to work on the music of the film. This last wishing to add a song to the original soundtrack, it chooses “Mad World”, first tube of the group Tears for Fears in 1982, and required of his/her friend childhood Gary Jules to interpret of it a new version, of final filled with emotion and more acoustics that the original. Mad World was the best seller of Christmas 2003 in England being classified # 1 during step less than three weeks. Among the other pieces which one can understand in film, one can quote: “The Killing Moon” of Echo & the Bunnymen, “Coils Will Tear Us Apart” of Joy Division, “Under the Milky Way” of The Church, “Notorious” of Duran Duran and “Proud To Be Loud” of Pantera; but also another title of Tears for Fears, “Head over heels”, which illustrates a memorable scene, that of the arrival and entry in their college of certain protagonists of the film (of which Donnie Darko). The action of film proceeding in the Years 1980, the recurrence of songs of Tears for Fears is explained by the great popularity of the group in the United States at that time specifies, having marked many spirits.
In the version Director' S cut the place of these musics is changed. The film is not opened any more by " The Killing Moon' but by “Never Tear Custom Apart” of INXS, “The Killing Moon” replaces then “Under The Milky Way” during the scene of the festival. “Under The Milky Way” is played in the radio when Donnie and its father are in the car.
