Donkey of Poitou

The donkey of Poitou is a race of ass originating in the west of the France (departments of the Two-Sevres, the Vendée, Vienna, Charente and Charente-Maritime).

It is a ass of big size (1,40 to 1,50 m with the garrot for the males, 1,35 to 1,45 m for the females), with a strong osseous structure, it weighs from 350 to 450 kg. The dress is uniformly bai brown, with the contour of the eyes, the nose and the silver plated gray muzzle.

The Baudet of Poitou is the oldest race of ass of France. The stud-book is open in 1884.

This race, precisely for its big size, was especially used for the production of Mulet S, by crossing with the Jument mulassière poitevine. But this activity which was flourishing until the 19th century almost disappeared. The donkey of Poitou failed to disappear from its cradle of origin after the Second world war. In 1977, the manpower any more but of 44 heads was not distributed there in eight breedings.

About 1980 a protection plan was implemented by the National stud farms, with the assistance of the stockbreeders and the interregional Parc of the Marsh poitevin. The total staff complement of the herd of pure race is approximately 350 heads.

A donkey of the Poitou and a she-ass of Poitou give Fedon.

Thanks to the exports carried out at the beginning of the 20th century, the donkey of Poitou is present in a certain number of foreign countries, in particular in Germany and with the the United States.
