Donges

Donges is a common French, located in the department the Loire-Atlantique and the area Pays of the Loire. In the cartulaire of Redon, Donges was named Dongia in 1104. Its inhabitants is called the Dongeois and Dongeoises .

Geography

The city is established in edge of the Loire, in an alluvial zone where the rock-mother levels.

History

The site is occupied since the Paléolithique, but it is necessary to await the Neolithic to find traces of an active settlement.

The village of Donges appears towards 370 and would have been an important point for the regional trade.

Middle Ages

With feudalism, the city is instituted in Viscount. Its territory includes about fifteen parishes, covering the marshes of the estuary of the the Loire.

At the 11th century the count of Nantes decides construction of a strong Château, which will be destroyed in 1125 on order of Conan III '' the Large '' in reprisal against the Viscount of the time.

Century of the lights

March 14th with the March 17th 1793 the city will be occupied by the Blancs .

Of 1771 with 1825 are undertaken work of draining of the marshes.

Industrialization

In 1853 a decree authorizes the passage of the train. It is the beginning of industrialization. In 1917, the port of Donges is built to unchoke that of Saint-Nazaire, is invaded by the material unloaded by the American and the English.

During the Years 1930, one built there Raffinerie S of Pétrole.

The borough was destroyed during the bombardments of the 24 and July 25th 1944 and was rebuilt 1 km from its initial site.

The current Raffinerie treats 8 million tons of crude oil per annum. It is the second refinery of France.
