Donbass
Divided between the Ukraine and the Russia, the Donbass is a coal basin, located between the Mer of Azov and the Don. It is an area historical, economic and cultural important of the Ukraine. The area includes/understands two oblasts (provinces) is pays : the Oblast de Donetsk and the Oblast de Lougansk. The town of Donetsk is regarded as the not-official capital of Donbass.
The name of the area comes from the fields of Houille discovered at the end of the 19th century, as of the river of the Gift which passes in the area.
The first city of Donbass emerged in 1676: Slovyansk, built to allow the advantageous extraction of the salt mines. In 1721, the vast ones and rich layers of coals were discovered there. It is what will start a very fast industrialization of the area.
Donbass also can, according to the circumstances, to include the Oblast de Rostov in Russia. This is explained to the fact why the coal basin of Donetsk extends geographically in Russia. Donbass is culturally close to Russia.
Donbass is the native area of the unfortunate candidate to the Ukrainian presidential elections of 2004, Viktor Ianoukovitch.
