Donauworth

Donauworth (in German Donauwörth ) is a city of the German state of Bavaria, in the area of Souabe.

On the center line of German highway of the holidays, " celebrates it; Romantic Road " , and at the junction of the Danube and Wornitz, Donauworth is located in the west of the Bavaria. The city has currently approximately 18  037 inhabitants. Thanks to its central situation, the city became a turntable of the Bavarian communication of Souabe.

Geography

The city is to 43 km in the north of Augsburg, 105 km in the North-West of Munich, approximately 100 km in the south of Nuremberg, on the the Danube, little before the confluence with the Lech.

History

It is said that the city was rested by two fishermen, where the the Danube (Donau) and the river Wörnitz meet.

It is historically important for Germany because it is the place of one of the incidents which led to the Guerre Thirty Year old (1618 - 1648). In 1606, majority of the Lutheran S.A. prevented the catholic residents of the city from holding a procession, causing a violent riot.

In 1704, Donauworth was still the theater of the War of succession of Spain (1702 - 1713). The duke of Marlborough walking of Flanders in Bavaria, arrived at the Danube, there or the French had envisaged to cross. The latter were surprised to find the troops of Marlborough there, which made it possible this one to take Donauwörth and to cross the Danube without problems.

The city is the starting point many excursions and visits in the surroundings. Five different and original landscapes extend around the city from the Danube: the Laugh, the natural park Altmühltal, Kesseltal, the natural park of Augsburg Westliche Wälder , the area of the the Danube and the Lech.
