Geography

Donaldville is a Western city of intermediate size of approximately between 250.000 and 350.000 inhabitants for some.

Don Rosa places to him at the beginning the state is in California, and Donaldville is in the north of San Francisco, not far from the town of Eureka. Later it will change the limits of the state of California to insert the state of Calisota.

In the history Mickey emperor of Calidornie appeared in the February 26th 1961, Romano Scarpa locates the city the fictitious state of Calidornie. In this history, the coast resembles that enormously California, with Donaldville in north, towards San Francisco and Mickeyville in the center, Bakersfield, although the author declares itself that the town of Mickeyville would be on the level of Los Angeles.

However the localization seems more than mobile, thus the episode a lame duck (season 1 #50) of the series the Band with Picsou , watch on a chart the town of Canardville, on the east coast of the United States on the level of Pittsburgh.

The city

According to a chart of Calisota drawn by Gift Rosa in the Invader of Strong Donaldville , the tenth episode of the Youth of Picsou , the city is bathed in the south by the river Tulebug , after it passed between the Black Forêt and the mountain of the Dent of the Devil and in north by a small bay.

Barks takes again to this last zone in the uncle Picsou seeks a heir and Scarpa details in an super-idea against a super-bridge! . It names the bay Baie of Audubon which it delimits by the island good rest . An immense bridge, built in this last history by Flairsou, crosses bay and makes it possible to shorten the skirting of 50 kilometers. In the series, Myster Mask, the city located of the other with dimensions of the bridge names Borough-the-Ducks ( St Duck in English). This bridge is largely inspired by the Golden Spoils Bridge.

The principal tourist building of the city, apart from the bridge, is the statue of Cornelius Écoutum, representing duck tightening between its hands a corn ear.

The most famous inhabitant of the city is the Uncle Picsou, whose safe is located on the hill Killmule , in the south of the city. The city is the seat of its commercial empire. Not far from the city the farm of Grand-Mère Donald is, where also Gus Glouton lives. It is a holiday place in family for Donald and his nephews, who it is in summer or in Christmas.

Fictitious history

The elements making it possible to know the history of Donaldville are dispersed in the cartoons of Carl Barks, and regularly taken again by Don Rosa. See in particular: the Youth of Picsou and Its Majesty Picsou Ier .

A copper plate found in a stock close to the trunk of Picsou proves that the Britannique Francis Drake based a fort the June 17th 1579 on a hill and names it “Strong Drake” ( Drake Borough in the original version, sometimes translated into Duckburg in French and Italian). The sailor hid there the lost library; Peg wood Penworthy remaining at the height to compile this knowledge in only one volume.

Located at the Calisota, country located at the north of California, Strong Drake is attacked in 1818 by the Spanish troops . It is then, according to Cornelius Écoutum ( Cornelius Coot ), the only enclave in the west of the Louisiana (bought by the United States in France) that Spain did not have. When the order of king George of England sometimes happens to give up the outpost, the captain in a hurry to flee gives the fort to a walker states-unien who is there, Cornelius Écoutum. This one manages to put in escape the Spanish troops while making cook ears of Maïs which is transformed into popcorn. This event is celebrated by the expensive erection of a monumental statue of Cornelius holding up of corn ears.

This day, Cornelius Écoutum plants the metal plate of Drake on a tree and renames its fort: Strong Donaldville ( Duckburg ). Thirty years later, Calisota is yielded to the the United States.

During the 19th century, families of pioneers settle in this far west . The descendants of Cornelius Écoutum have the majority of the grounds. Among them, Elvire, known thereafter under the name of Grandmother Donald. Nevertheless, in a need for money to return at his place, the brother of this one, Jules Écoutum, sells to a minor Klondike the hill of Killmule on which the ruins of the fort are. This minor once settles made fortune there: he names Balthazar Picsou, and following its catastrophic arrival in the car, the hill is renamed Killmotor.

Picsou built there its gigantic trunk in 1902 (according to the Youth of Picsou of Gift Rosa; in the Years 1950 according to Barks). Under the impulse of the contractor, Donaldville knows a rapid economic advancement at the beginning of the 20th century. But, on its return in 1930, Picsou became the richest Duck of the world and decides to live in misanthropist far from his family and of Donaldvillois: it closes all its companies.

It is after Christmas 1947 that Donaldville makes second great strides, durable this time, when Balthazar Picsou decides to take again service after a profitable meeting with its nephew Donald and his great nephews Riri, Fifi and Loulou. The city reappears then and takes again the economic development which she had known before 1930. However, it does not seem to benefit the inhabitants from the district Bidonville from Pauvreville (see Christmas in Pauvreville ).

According to the draftsman Gift Rosa, all the adventures of Picsou created by Barks take place between 1947 and the death of the character whom he imagines in 1967 (year of the retirement of Barks). Donaldville thus has often appearance in these authors of a city of the years 1950 and 1960. Other draftsmen followed this spirit, others also modernized the city to put it at the taste following decades.

Principal inhabitants

To note that the majority of ducks living with Donaldville have Duck like family name. There are not inevitably family ties between Donald and Daisy.

However, in the majority of the versions, the ducks are only one small minority of the inhabitants of the city which is especially populated dogs and other birds humanoïdes.
