Donald Ier of Scotland
Donald Ier (Domnall mac Ailpín) (813 - 862) was king of Scotland of 858 with 862.
He was youngest wire of Alpin II of Dalriada and succeeded on the throne his brother Kenneth mac Alpin after the death of this one.
Described like the capricious son of foreign the , Donald had a reign runs. He instituted a whole of laws and rights (known under the name of laws of Áed Find, or Aedh) which included the habit of the Tanistrie . According to this habit, the successor of a king was elected during his life among the elder ones and more deserving his relationship, often preferring a collateral relative (brother, cousin or uncle) with a descendant. During the reign of Donald, his nephew, Constantin, were selected to succeed to him his death. The habit of the tanistrie lasted until the reign of Malcolm II.
Circumstances of its " death; in Ides of avril" i.e the April 13rd 862 are dubious; he died:
- Is in a battle with Scone in the Perthshire according to the " Chronicon Elegiacum" ;
- Is in its castle of Cinn Belachoir according to the " Picte" chronicle;.
- Is in Rathinveramon according to the " Latin list of kings d' Écosse".
It was buried with Iona. Alfred P. Smyth considers that he is the father of the king Giric.
