Donald II of Scotland
Donald II of Scotland (Domnall mac Causantin) is king d' Écosse of 889 with 900. He is the son of the king Constantin I {{er}} and first cousin of the preceding king Eochaid as well as his successor Constantin II.
Donald takes the throne after a battle which is for him a revenge against the king Giric (who reigned jointly in Eochaid), which had killed the uncle of Donald Aed in 878. After the death of Giric, Donald exiles Eochaid and seizes the power for itself.
It is under its reign that the kingdom Bretons of Strathclyde passes under domination of the Scots to create the kingdom of Alba.
Its reign coincides with the revival of the invasion Danish, which comes less to plunder that to occupy the grounds bordering the Anglo-Saxon Scotland and kingdoms . The Danes had conquered all the septentrional part of Scotland under the control of “Sigurd the Powerful one”. Donald is also empêtré in fights against the tribes of plunderers of the Highlands.
The details of its death are not certain. According to an account, it is killed with Dunnotar in the south of Stonehaven while fighting against a Danish invasion; according to another, he dies of infirmity, consequence of his campaigns against Highlanders, a rather rare natural death for the time.
He is buried on the island of Iona, the historical place of rest of the kings of Dal Riada and of first kings Écossais. His/her cousin Constantin succeeds to him. His/her son Malcolm Ier of Scotland becomes king in 942 or 943.
