Don Quichotte with Dulcinée

Don Quichotte in Dulcinée is a collection of three Chanson S for Baryton and accompaniment composed by Maurice Ravel in 1932 on poems of Paul Morand. It is about the last work completed by Ravel, of which there exist two versions: one for voice and orchestra, the other arranged for voice and piano.

Music

It is to answer a ordering of the singer and actor Fédor Chaliapine that Ravel wrote these three melodies, which were intended for the film Don Quichotte of the Austrian Georg Wilhelm Pabst. Chaliapine had in fact necessary these melodies near several type-setters (that of which Ravel did not know anything) and finally it is those composed by Jacques Ibert which were retained - the latter was extremely constrained besides.

These three songs are an original homage to the hero of Cervantes. If they reflect for the last time imaginary Spanish of Ravel, they mark in their form a return to an esthetics much more traditional than those of the last large masterpieces of the musician. But perhaps this apparent simplicity takes part it in the popularity of the triptych.
