Don Giovanni is a opera in two acts of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, on a Italian booklet in of Lorenzo da Ponte. The first took place with the Théâtre of the States of Prague the October 29th 1787, where Mozart had triumphed the previous year with “the Marriages of Figaro”

Argument

Act I

Place, Seville

Time, the 17th century

the garden of the house of Donna Anna. It is the night.
Leporello assembles the guard in front of the house in which Don Giovanni was introduced in order to allure Donna Anna, been engaged of Ottavio (Introduction: “Notte E giorno faticar”). Suddenly, Donna Anna appears with Don Giovanni. She wants to know which it is and calls for the aid; when the Commander occurs, it causes the attacker in duel. It is struck with died by Don Giovanni (“Ah! Soccorso! ”), which escapes without to be recognized. Donna Anna is shocked, and Gift Ottavio swears revenge (Récitatif: “My qual May”; Duet: “Fuggi, crudele, fuggi! ”).

Don Giovanni and Leporello arrive (Récitatif: “Orsù, spicciati presto”). Elvira gave, which it allured then given up, appears. Don Giovanni does not recognize it and tries to bind knowledge (Trio: “Ah, chi semi dice May”; Récitatif: “Stele! che vedo? ”). When Don Giovanni recognizes it, he dodges himself, leaving it with Leporello, which tries to comfort it by presenting to him the list of the conquests of its Master (Air: “Madamina, it catalogo E questo”). Elvira makes wish of revenge (Récitatif and air: “In questa formed”).

A procession of villagers who prepare the marriage of Masetto and Zerlina appears (Duet and chorus: “Giovinette che fate ale amore”). Don Giovanni notices Zerlina, which it likes, and gets rid of been engaged jealous, Masetto (Récitatif: “Zerlina senza me not può star”; Air: “Ho capito”). As soon as Don Giovanni is alone with Zerlina, it starts to allure it (Récitatif: “Alfin Siam liberati” and Duet: “There Ci darem the mano”).

Donna Elvira joined them and takes along Zerlina right before it yields (Air: “Ah, fuggi it traditor”). Don Giovanni meets Anna and Ottavio then. Elvira gave, of return, the warn against that which gave up it (Quartet: “Not Ti fidar”). Don Giovanni answers her reproaches while trying to make it pass for insane, without managing to convince her interlocutors. After its departure, Anna thinks of having recognized as Don Giovanni the murderer of her father, and tells the aggression with Ottavio which decides to avenge it (Récitatif: “Gift Ottavio, its morta! ”; Air: “Gold sai chi the onore”). Leporello informs Don Giovanni that the guests for the marriage arrived, that it succeeded in occupying Masetto, but that the return of Zerlina very wasted. It succeeded in getting rid of Elvira. Don Giovanni is extremely carefree and merry (Air: “Finch' han dal vino”). It turns over to the palate.

Zerlina follows Masetto and tries to alleviate its jealousy (Récitatif and air: “Batti, batti, O beautiful Masetto”). Don Giovanni invites them both with the ball. Leporello invites also Elvira, Ottavio and Anna, masked (Sextet: “Bisogna aver coraggio”).

Three dance tunes follow one another: minuet, fine, and dance German. Don Giovanni involves Zerline outside, while Leporello draws the attention of Masetto. When Zerlina shouts with the assistance, Don Giovanni plays the comedy by pushing Leporello of her sword, and shows it to have wanted to allure Zerlina. Nobody believes it, and crowd encircles it, but it succeeds in fleeing.

Act II

the street. It grows dark.
Leporello wants to leave its Master, but Don Giovanni convinces it to remain and exchanges her clothing with him (Duet: “Goes, che sei matto”). Elvira appears with its balcony (Trio: “Ah taci, ingiusto core! ”) and Leporello, disguised, sings a declaration of love to him. It takes it for Don Giovanni and share with him. Don Giovanni then sings a serenade with the chambermaid of Elvira (“Deh vieni went will finestra”).

Surprised by Masetto and its friends, the Leporello forgery sends the peasants in the search of Don Giovanni, then beats Masetto before saving (Récitatif and air: “Metà di voi qua vadano”). Zerlina finds Masetto and (Air comforts it: “Vedrai, carino, sei buonino”).

Elvira and Leporello are joined by Ottavio, Anna, Masetto and Zerlina, which want to kill the pseudo-Gift Giovanni (Sextet: “Sola, Sola in buio loco”). Elvira beseeches their pity, and Leporello is uncovered. He asks pity (Air: “Ah, pietà! ”), and finally succeeds in fleeing. Ottavio sees in its events the proof that Don Giovanni is well the assassin of the Commander, and promises to avenge it (Air: “It me tesoro intanto”). Remained only, Elvira admits that she still loves Don Giovanni and gives up revenge (Air: “In quali eccessi”).

Leporello tells the recent events with Don Giovanni, who laughs with the glares. A voice coming from a statue requires of him to leave deaths in peace. On order of Don Giovanni, Leporello reads the inscription at the base of the statue: “In my tomb, I await my revenge”. The servant trembles of fear, but its Master forces it to invite the statue to dine (Duet: “O ruled gentillissima”). The statue shakes the head and answers “Yes”.

Donna Anna asks Don Ottavio to push back their marriage, which afflicts it deeply (Air: “Crudele”). Little by little, it calms down and its love confirms to him.

Don Giovanni begins her meal, while the musicians interpret operatic arias (Finale: “Già the mensa”). Elvira enters, and tries to convince Don Giovanni of repentance (“the ultima prova”). But this last is laughed at it (“Vivan the femmine”). While leaving, Elvira pushes a cry of terror. Leporello will see what occurs and howls in its turn, because it saw the statue of the Commander which approaches, and knocks on the door. As its servant refuses to open, Don Giovanni undertakes some. The Commander between (“Don Giovanni, has cenar teco”), but refuses to sit down with table. He invites Don Giovanni to dine, and this last accepts and the hand tightens to him. The statue requires repentance then of him, but Don Giovanni refuses. The Commander withdraws himself and Don Giovanni is absorbed by the flames.

All the other characters enter, and Leporello learns to them what has just occurred. Anna agree to marry Ottavio after the mourning of his/her father. Elvira decides to be withdrawn in a convent. Zerlina and Masetto will marry, while Leporello wants to find a better Master (final Chorus: “Questo fine E it”).

  • the air of “deh vieni went will finestra” was included in the music of the film the Master of music of Gerard Corbiau (1987).
  • This same air was useful in a commercial Barilla in 1992.
  • the air of the scene of the commander belongs to the film music Amadeus of Milos Forman (1984).
  • Mozart also recycled the music of the famous aria Non piú will andrai for Don Giovanni. That was done by knowing that the music would be recognized by the audience hearing it. In the context of the intrigue of Don Giovanni, this air is played by a troop of musicians who divert the main character at the time of his dinner.
  • the initial topic of the opening of the opera is in fact the topic of the final scene with the commander (" Don Giovanni has cenar teco").
  • In the film Amadeus of Milos Forman (1984), Salieri, the main character, tells that makes this opera of it is used for Mozart for expier his faults, while making itself guilty of died of his/her father, who played a role more than major in his life. Indeed Don Giovanni (Mozart seems it) responsible for died for the father of Anna (the name of the sister of Mozart) which is commander (a rather important position). When the commander requests it repentance, Don Giovanni refuses, thus causing the departure of the commander. Moreover Mozart Don Juan in an opera had already retranscribed: then why write Don Giovanni?
  • In film of Claude Chabrol, the Ceremony (1995), it is diffused during the last part and plays a big role in the intrigue.
