Dominique Lampson
Dominique Lampson , or Lampsonius , born in 1532 with Bruges and deceased in 1599 with Liege, was a Humaniste, poet and Flemish artist.
Life and work
Little celebrates as a painter, Lampson is especially known like theorist of art. One indeed owes him the chapter devoted to the Flemish painters, in the second edition of the Vite de' più eccellenti pittori, scultori E architettori of Vasari in 1568.Between 1554 and 1558, he was private secretary of Reginald Pole, archbishop of Canterbury. He accompanied it in Rome and Liege, where he met the painter Lambert Lombard. To died of Reginald Pole, it entered to the service of the prince-bishops of Liege, Robert de Berghes, Gerard de Groesbeek and Ernest of Bavaria. In 1565, it wrote the life of the painter Lambert Lombard, entitled Lamberti Lombardi apud Eburones pictoris celeberrimi vita (ED. by A. Del Vita in 1938 and transl. france by J. Hubaux and J. Puraye in 1949). In this work, Lampson exposes its theoretical designs on Article.
In 1572, it published a book conprenant a series of 23 engraved portraits famous painters of the old Netherlands, entitled Pictorum aliquot celebrium Germaniae inferioris effigies ( the effigies of the famous painters of the Netherlands ED. by J. Puraye in 1956). Each portrait is accompanied by a small Latin poem, written by Lampson. At that time, Lampson had as a pupil Otto van Veen, who was marked by his teaching.
Lampson also wrote Latin poems and maintained a long correspondence with Vasari and G. Clovio. We know only one fabric of Lampson, a Crucifixion of 1576 preserved today at the church Saint-Quentin d' Hasselt.
