Dominique Joseph Garat

Dominique Joseph Garat (Bayonne, September 8th 1749 - Ustaritz, December 9th 1833) is a lawyer, journalist and philosopher French. He was elected with the French Academy in 1803.

Born in the the Low-Pyrenees, Dominique Garat arrives strong young person at Paris, and launches out in the career of the academic prices. He obtains in 1779 the price of eloquence of the French Academy for his Éloge of Suger . Its Praise of Montausier and Éloge of Fontenelle are crowned in the contests of 1781 and 1784.

Writer of the Mercure de France for his literary part, it passes then to the Journal of Paris , is elected appointed with the General states of 1789 of the Labourd (Basque Country). October 9th 1792, it replaces Danton with the Ministère of Justice, and for this reason notifies with Louis XVI the sentence of dead (January 20th 1793) and brings a confessor to him. The January 22nd 1793, it replaces Jean Marie Roland with the ministry for the Interior and remains at this station until August 1793. In October 1793, it is stopped like of Gironde, but quickly released. The Thermidor 9 year II (July 27th 1794), it votes against Maximilien de Robespierre. It is then charged with a pulpit of Physiologie to the teacher training school, then sent ambassador to Naples, after the 12 Fructidor.

Under the Directory, he is elected with the Conseil of Old the (1799). After the Coup d'etat of the 18 brumaire (November 9th 1799), Napoleon Bonaparte appoints it senator, and in 1808, count d' Empire. Although he was member of the Room of the representatives during the Hundred Days, he is not worried under the Restauration and becomes member of the Academy of Science morals and political after 1830. Dominique Joseph Garat died in the Château of Urdains, with Bassussarry.

One says that Dominique Joseph Garat became, after having notified in Louis XVI the sentence of dead on January 20th, 1793, more and more grognon and contained and that its gold glasses which served this January 20th, 1793, did not leave more than one drawer to which it was interdict of touching. Familiar of the house of Dominique Joseph Garat, the priest of Ustaritz used them one day to read his breviary and when Dominique Joseph Garat returning from a visit saw them, he exclaimed: “ the glasses of the sentence ” and fell struck down.
