Dominique Gaye Mariolle

Dominique Gaye Mariolle or Gaye-Mariole, was born the December 27th 1767 with the hamlet of Séoube, in a few kilometers in the south of Sainte-Marie de Campan , appendix of the commune of Campan, dies the June 19th 1818 fifty years old. Wire of Jean Mariole and Marie Laballe Pardeihla.

Biography

The February 5th 1804, it is made knight of the Légion of honor.

The Emperor reviews his unit the day before the battle of Tilsitt, in July 1807. To be distinguished, Gaye Mariolle presents the weapons, not with a rifle, but with a mounting of gun of 4 inches weighing about thirty kilograms. But it would not be therefore in the beginning expression “making it the mariolle”, indeed this one is found in the texts as of the 16th century and comes from Italian mariolo .

He withdraws in 1810 with the rank of Sergent and finishes his life with Tarbes. He still succeeds in making the shot against the English the March 20th 1814 with some volunteers.

Mariolle is used as model with David for a vast fresco, the “Distribution of the Eagles” which represents a group of soldiers of the various bodies which will receive, of the hands of the Emperor, the new standards with the tricolor silk strewn with bees of gold and on the pole of which the imperial eagle half-opens its wings. It also appears in the table “the interview of the Emperors in Erfurt”. It is also represented on the Triumphal arch of the Carousel in Paris, in the form of a sculpture of angle.

The table of David partially was copied by one of its disciples named Without, in the form of separate portrait. This table was given in 1865 to the commune of Campan by Achille Jubinal, Député with the legislative body for the district of Bagnères, and Mécène. It appears in good place in the room of the council of Campan.

In homage to Gaye Mariolle, there exists from now on a brotherhood of Mariolles and a festival of Mariolles second Sunday of July with of course Pastourelles de Campan and a “pass-street”.

It will die out the June 19th 1818 fifty years old in Tarbes with the n°1 of the street of the East which names today which occurred the Marne, to the corner of the place Marcadieu, a small house under the name of house of the alphabet, because each window of the frontage was marked letters of the alphabet.
