Domingos Jose Gonçalves de Magalhães
Domingos Jose Gonçalves de Magalhães (born the August 13rd 1811 with Rio de Janeiro - died the July 10th 1882 with Rome, Italy), first and single baron, then Viscount of Araguaia, wire of Pedro Gonçalves de Magalhães Chaves, was a doctor, professor, diplomat, politician, writer and Brazilian poet of the 19th century. He is regarded as a pioneer of the Romantisme in Brazil, starting from the publication, in 1836 of his collection of poetry Suspiros poéticos E saudades . He was also a dramatic author, and was thus the first Brazilian one to write a tragedy.
Biography
August 1st Domingos Jose Gonçalves de Magalhães was brought to fill of many diplomatic missions in France, in Italy, with the the Vatican, in Argentine, Uruguay and with the Paraguay.He died in Rome, where it was to represent its country near the the Holy See, the July 10th 1882.

Gonçalves de Magalhães and Romanticism
After having completed its studies of Medicine, Domingos Jose Gonçalves de Magalhães travelled to Europe, where he discovered the romantic ideas. On its return, it was a crucial factor of the introduction of this movement into its country, and played, with the other Brazilian romantic writers, a big role in the process of national identification of the Brésil according to independence. Its importance is due especially to the fact that it was the introducer of the Romantisme in Brazil, and that although its works were regarded as weak by the literary critic. Although it had returned towards a religious poetry, as that appears clearly in Suspiros poéticos E saudades , it also cultivated a poetry nationalist indianist of character, as in the poem epic has Confederação back Tamoios (1857. This work started a violent polemic with Jose de Alencar, because of the vision very distant one from the other, that each author had Indien.
