Domestic network of telecommunications for technology, teaching and research

RENATER ( D bucket Na tional of telecommunications for the T echnology, the E nseignement and the R echerche) is the different Data-processing network French connecting the universities and the various research centres enter them to Metropolitan France and in the Départements overseas. Today, even the colleges and the colleges are often connected to RENATER. The organizations members of the Groupement of public interest RENATER are great research organizations: ECA, CIRAD, CNES, CNRS, INRA, INRIA, INSERM, BRGM, CEMAGREF and IRD, as well as the Ministry for Higher education and Research. RENATER manages also the terminal point of traffic SFINX, and has connections research projects with the CERN and soon Cadarache.

It is about a network binding more than 600 sites via a connection very high banc (connections until 10Gbps, heart of network with 80Gbps in Île-de-France) and compatible IPv6.

RENATER is connected to the network paneuropéen GEANT2 (via a connection with 10Gbps). It is also connected to Internet, in France via SFINX (with 3Gbps), and in the world via Open Transit of France Telecom to 5Gbps.

Since the June 9th 2005, the 4th generation of RENATER was installation. RENATER-4 proposes a significant evolution so much in the speed of connections (connection with the Corsica passes for example from 155Mbps to 2,5Gbps) that in the availability and the quality of the network.

In its fourth version, RENATER offers services Unicast and multicast, IPv4 and IPv6, as well as services of class of service and VPN of level 2 and 3. Infrastructure RENATER-4 consists of two subsets: on the one hand connections WDM rented intended for the traffic of production, and on the other hand bonds in Fiberoptic black intended for the scientific great projects.

The 5th version of RENATER is currently in project. An invitation to tender was launched the July 18th 2007 concerning the installation of the metropolitan infrastructures. This version will offer a reinforcement of the existing grid, and will inaugurate the connection with the research center of Cadarache.
