Domenico Rossi

Domenico Rossi (1657-1737) was a Architecte Italy N.

Born close to the Lake Lugano, it left early to Venice to study the Architecture, where it was also initiated with, the size of the stone.

It supervised the rebuilding of the church S. Girolamo in 1705, and it gained the contest for the frontage of the church S. Stae (S. Eustachio) in 1709.

He travelled then to Rome in 1710 in company of the sculptors Pietro Baratta and Giuseppe Torretti, and of the architect Antonio Scalfarotto. In 1714, it was selected to restructure the church of the Blessed Virgin with Ljubljana.

As from 1715, he was the architect of the church of the Jésuites in Venice, S. Maria Assunta. The family Manin, principal guards of the Jesuits, asked him to increase the Villa Manin in Passariano (Codroipo), close to Udine. At the same time, it renovated the cathedral of Udine.

The chief of work of Rossi to Venice is the Corner palate beyond Regina ( Ca' Cornaro beyond Regina ) on the Grand Channel (1723-1730), example of the return to the traditional order after excesses of the Baroque. This palate shelters nowadays the files of the Biennale de Venise, as well as a vast library of contemporary art.
