Domenico Cimarosa
Domenico Cimarosa (December 17th 1749 - January 11th 1801) is an Italian type-setter, born in Aversa in the Royaume from Naples.
Biography
His/her parents were poor but wanted to give him a good education. When they settled with Naples they sent it in a religious school dependant on a monastery of the city. There was an organist, the Polcano father, who was struck by the intelligence of the young boy and who took in heart to teach him the bases from the music as well as Italian literature, old and modern. Thanks to him, Cimarosa could enter as raises at the institute of Santa Maria di Loreto where there remained eleven years, studying particularly the work of the large Italian musicians. Piccini, Sacchini and other good musicians appears among its professors. At 23 years, Cimarosa began its career from type-setter with a Opera-puffs out entitled Stravaganze del Conte (Extravagances of the count) of which the first representation took place in 1772 in Teatro del Fiorentini of Naples. This work gained one big hit and was followed the same year by Pazzie di Stelladaura E di Zoroastro (Madnesses of Stelladaura and Zoroastre), a joke marked by humor and the imagination which also met success. The fame of the young type-setter started to be spread in all Italy. One invited it to Rome so that it produces there an opera for the theater season of this year and it was another comic work Italiana in Londra (the Italian in London).
During the 13 following years, no striking fact is to be noted in the life and the career of Cimarosa. He wrote many operas for the various Italian scenes, resident in Rome, Naples or in some place where its work of type-setter called it. From 1784 to 1787, he lived in Florence and entirely devoted himself to compose for the opera of this city.
Works of this period are numerous, mainly operas, comic or seriated, of the crowned cantatas, and other compositions. Most notable are Caio Mario , the three biblical operas Assalone , Giuditta and It Sacrificio d' Abramo , like It Convito di Pietra and Ballerina amante , a comic opera created with Venice which met a great success.
Towards 1788, Cimarosa went to Saint-Pétersbourg on the invitation of Catherine II. There there remained four years and composed much, as a majority of the parts of occasion , whose even names are lost. In 1792, Cimarosa left Saint-Pétersbourg for Vienna at the request of the emperor Léopold II. It wrote there its chief of work It Matrimonio segreto , which takes row among the most completed the compositions profane vocal music. In 1793, Cimarosa went back to Naples, where It Matrimonio segreto and its other works were acclaimed. Among the compositions which it produced during this last Neapolitan stay must be mentioned charming it opera Astuzie femminili .
This period of its life is obscured by intrigues of the envieuses and hostile people, of which its old rival Paisiello. Antimonarchist and favorable to the proclamation of the Republic parthénopéenne by the French troops, it for that was condemned to death, like many of his political friends, with the return of the Bourbons. Thanks to the intercession of influential admirors, his sentence was commuted to banishment, and it left Naples with the intention to turn over to Saint-Pétersbourg. But its health was declining and he died of an ignition of the intestines on January 11th, 1801 in Venice. The nature of this evil gave birth to the rumor from poisoning, that an official investigation contradicted. It left one of its operas, Artemizia , unfinished.
