Dom Mintoff
Dom Mintoff , of its complete name Duminku Mintoff , is a Statesman Maltese, born with Cospicua on August 6th, 1916.
After having received a training of engineer in architecture, Dom Mintoff is elected in 1944 general secretary of the Maltese Workers party. Appointed in 1947, he becomes Minister for the rebuilding, then Prime Minister between 1955 and 1958. Initially favorable to a redefinition of the relations with the British metropolis, he affirms himself finally like a partisan of the Indépendance of Malta.
From 1961 to 1969, the religious sanctions taken against the Labor leaders and militants of left move away the Maltese Workers party from the capacity, in spite of progress in seats at the time of the legislative elections. Chief of the opposition, Dom Mintoff criticizes the financial agreements and of defense signed between Malta and Great Britain at the time of the independence of the archipelago on September 21st, 1964.
Become again Prime Minister between 1971 and 1984, it obtains the withdrawal of Malta of the staff of NATO, established in the archipelago without Malta not being member of the military organization. December 13rd, 1974, Malta becomes a Republic and breaks its last institutional bonds with the British crown. The withdrawal of the British soldiers on March 31st, 1979 devotes the independence of the new State. With the international plan, Malta approaches to the Libya and the socialist States, in particular the Soviet Union, the China and the North Korea.
In the economic domain and social, Dom Mintoff follows a policy of nationalizations and sets up a Welfare state, while giving the priority to the development of the infrastructures, industry and the hospitals. The national airline company Air Malted is founded in 1973.
Remained implied in the Maltese national political life after having ceased exerting the functions of Prime Minister in 1974, Dom Mintoff was opposed to the adhesion of Malta to the European Union.
