Dolphin common to short nozzle

The Dauphin common to short nozzle ( Delphinus delphis ) is a Cétacé Delphinidae which one meets in all moderated water, subtropical or tropical of the whole world.

Subspecies

  • Delphinus delphis ponticus , endemic of the Black Sea and a maximum size lower than that of the species (200 cm).
  • Delphinus delphis capensis , present in the South Atlantic it has the longer rostre and is sometimes regarded as a species with whole share: Delphinus capensis .

Description

Form characteristic of the dolphins with, as its common noun indicates it, a short nozzle and marked well, this dolphin is of a size from 180 to 260 cm for a varying weight from 75 to 115 kg.

Its back is of a color active of the bluish gray to the black. The sides present two great clear tasks (chamois for the task before and clear gray for the back) meeting in a point located plumb with the dorsal.

Habitat

One meets in particular this species in the Mediterranean and in the part is Black Sea. It often moves in great number close to the coasts, especially in summer.

Food mode

Delphinus delphis drives out primarily groups and nourishes of them Poisson S of surface (Hareng S, Maquereau X, Anchois,…) that it supplements sometimes with Céphalopode S.

Behavior

Swim very fast reaching 50 km/h even more. Longevity is from 25 to 30 years.

Reproduction

Sexual maturity at the two years age. The couplings generally take place in summer. The females, after a 10 months gestation, give rise to small measures from 80 to 95 cm length. The maternal instinct seems particularly developed. The Sevrage takes place around 4 months. The female can reproduce every year.

Ecology

Delphinus delphis would be sensitive to pollution chemical and acoustic what could explain its decline in the Mediterranean. At sea Black, the population which was the subject of an intensive fishing until in the Années 1960 today is driven out.
