Dolmen Lo Morrel back Fados (Aude)
The dolmen Lo Morrel back Fados , located at Pépieux, (Aude), on a slope named “ Morrèl of mow Fadas ” (slope of the Fairies), is also called the Dolmen of the Fairies ( Dolmen of mow Fadas ). It is largest dolmen with corridors of the south of France. It was built towards 3.500 before J. - C. by the people of the culture of Véraza. It is certainly one of the most beautiful megaliths of France.
A gigantic size
The department of the Aude, in Languedoc, is not a famous ground of the Mégalithisme for the number of its monuments, which are very right a hundred, against 550 for the department close to the Herault. On the other hand, the phenomenon megalithic is characterized there by the very important size of some of these monuments. The Menhir S of Counozouls and Malves-in-Minervois respectively reach 8,90 meters and 5 meters height. The dolmen of Saint-Eugene reaches 15 meters length and 30 meters of width.
The length of the dolmen Lo Morrèl of mow Fadas reaches 25 meters. It is located on a broad Tumulus 35 meters. The two flagstones port-holes delimit the room with the two corridors. An enormous flagstone, which weighs between twenty and thirty tons, was transferred onto nearly two kilometers.
False “a shady walk”
These very long dolmens with corridor were formerly called “alley-glazes”. Their architectural descriptions not corresponding exactly to the commonly allowed definition (the corridor is less broad here than the room and in general the monument was covered only by only one large flagstone), they are today called “dolmens with broad corridor”. In this type of dolmens, the dry stone walls alternate with flagstones smaller than those of the sepulchral room. The corridor narrows towards its external end.
