In the format of HD DVD, TrueHD is an obligatory codec - all the readers (audios and vidéos) of HD DVD must support the extraction and the decoding of the shape of wave (stereo) of 2 channels of a bitstream of TrueHD. HD DVD makes it possible the audiotrack (primary) single of a film to be coded in TrueHD, without the current secondary audiotracks. In the disc of Blue-ray, TrueHD is an optional codec, meaning that TrueHD can only be present on a disc which contains already a primary soundtrack AC-3. Primary audiotrack AC-3 ensures all the readers (audios and vidéos) of Blue-ray, including those unable to treat TrueHD, can reach a playable audiotrack.

For Blu-ray and HD DVD, the possibilities of TrueHD are the same ones: the program can carry to 8 discrete audio channels, with a depth of sample and a rate of 24 bit/96 kilocycle. (Disc) the maximum coded bitrate is 18 Mbit/s, although the film-titles (up to now) are remained below 5 Mbit/s. All compatible readers TrueHD are capable of downmixing its TrueHd towards an arbitrary number of more suitable channels. For example, all the readers (audios and vidéos) able to read TrueHD can create a downmix (stereophony-compatible) of 2 channels of a audiotrack of source of 6 channels.

To connect a source of TrueHD to a receiver of TrueHD requires a numerical-bond able to transport the bitstream coded (up to 18 Mbit/s), or unpacked linear-PCM acoustics (>35 Mbit/s). HDMI 1.1 (and higher) can transport PCM-audio multichannel, and can thus transport an unpacked audiotrack of TrueHD. A bond of HDMI 1.3 (or higher) is required to transport TrueHD in the raw form of bitstream.TOSLINK (and SPDIF) cannot carry TrueHD of the whole, because of the insufficient bitrate-capacity.

the players HDMI-equipped internally decode TrueHD with LPCM, and produce the LPCM above an interface of HDMI 1.1 (or higher). Although HDMI 1.3 supports the transmission of the bitstreams of TrueHD, this device has to be still employed in any player. The players of HD DVD can transcribe the bitstream of TrueHD in a format different of legacy (such as DIGITAL or SDR dolby), providing an approximation of high-quality of acoustics of TrueHD above a cable of legacy TOSLINK.

The phantom of the opera, exit on April 18th, of 2006 on HD DVD, was the first film thevideo one to offer a soundtrack of TrueHD.
